There are a few key factors to consider before working with a new contractor. Factors such as business history, financial stability, payment history, safety records, and so on. If you can't find the contractor you're looking for in our Contractor Profiles (please add them and we can begin collecting reviews), there are still some options to prequalify the contractor you may potentially be working with. A good place to start would be to take look at their reviews on Angie's List or the Better Business Bureau. Also, since you're located in California, be sure to verify that they have a valid, and current contractor license on the California Contractors State License Board website. As far as financial stability, there are a couple of different ways to determine their credit history. Sites such as Dunn & Bradstreet, Equifax, or Experian offer credit reports for small businesses. Some safety records should also be publicly available through OSHA or the National Council on Compensation Insurance.   Lastly, you can always just request some general information straight from the contractor. Look for things like the typical size of their projects, current labor force, the and current insurance coverage. If they tend to work with repeat subs or suppliers, reach out to those subs or customers to see if they've had any problems working with the contractor in the past. These are just a few methods. You can read about some of these and more in this article: Prequalifying a Contractor | A Guide for Subs, Suppliers, & Owners Hope this helps!
