Virginia, like every state, has certain requirements for what information must appear on the face of a mechanics lien in order for the lien to be sufficient. These requirements are set forth by §43-4 (directly for GCs, and by reference for subcontractors). This section, notes that:
"The memorandum shall also contain the claimant’s license or certificate number issued by the Board for Contractors pursuant to Chapter 11 (§ 54.1-1100 et seq.) of Title 54.1, if any, and the date such license or certificate was issued and the date such license or certificate expires."
Further, sections 43-5 and 43-8 (the sections defining the sufficiency of a mechanics lien for GCs and subcontractors, respectively) note that "Contractor license or certificate number of claimant (if applicable)" is a required field.
