MichiganBack ChargesMechanics Lien

In May of 2020, after many delays and issues, a well respected, established and reputable contractor was hired to do extensive repairs to our home after a severe hail storm when they simply walked off the job in September of 2021. The job was 99% finished and there was still a balance due of many thousand dollars. We have not heard from the company since! Did the company just write it off? Should I worry about future problems arising from this?

If they walked off the job in September 2021, you do not have to worry about a construction lien for the balance since construction liens have to be filed within 90 days of the last date of work on a site. However, the statute of limitations is 6 years for a contract action. So keep the documentation showing what you paid to finish the job (and finish it), Deduct that from the balance due and that may be what you owe the contractor -- if it comes calling for the $$. Regardless, I have had this happen to several clients over the years and the contractors simply walked away and wrote the job off. If that is what happened count yourself lucky.
