Does a contractor have to show his receipt for materials?

Washington

I hired a contractor for a remodel of my house. On our contract it had materials listed as an estimate. He is now refusing to show me receipts for some of the materials. Is this legal? Does he have to show me receipts for materials he purchased and used?

It all depends upon your fee agreement. If you agreed to a fixed fee contract, then NO. If your contract was based upon how much he spent for materials, such as a cost-plus contract, then YES.

Hello Mr Scott.

On this topic, we have a project in progress and our contract states 3 times that material costs may change subject to market. In this case is he legally obligated to show actual costs/receipt/invoices upon request?

thanks!
