Can I file a mechanics lien on a government agency?

We have a job with Balfour Beaty working on the Jacksonville Transportation System Admin and Bus Transfer. Our last date on site was 4.15.2020. We were wondering if we are able to file a mechanics lien on a government agency?

Typically a lien cannot be filed on public property. However, on public projects there is normally a labor and material payment bond that protects subcontractors and suppliers when they are not paid. Normally notice is required to be given within 90 days from your last day of work. Since that is coming up, you should immediately send a notice letter to BB, by certified mail, stating the amount owed, attaching the invoices, and stating that you are making a claim under any payment bond issued for the project. You should ask BB to send you a copy of the bond. In addition to the letter, you should contact BB immediately and ask them to email you a copy of the bond. It would be good to review that and to have it on hand. You could also ask the owner's rep or the architect for the bond.
