Can a landscaping contractor put a lien on my house for work not in contract

South CarolinaMechanics Lien

I asked for bids for a landscaping job for paver walkways and patio. I hired a landscape contractor after he submitted his bid. Now that he has stated he is completely finished with the job, he is now saying he didnt include the walkways on the original bid. His bill/contract has gone from the original $13,000 to $15,000 bid to an astounding $32,000. He never submitted an amendment to his contract however we went ahead and paid him $27,000 because we wanted him off our property once and for all. His professionalism throughout the work was subpar and his workers told me he was known for underbidding jobs to get the work and then asking for more money. They actually offered me their phone numbers to hire them directly if I ever needed more work. Today the postal service delivered a lien. for $5300.
